The Academy of Medicine of Cleveland Auxiliary (f. 1940) is a group for spouses of physicians who are members of the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland, Ohio. The creation of the auxiliary was brought about by the national emergency of World War II. The first meeting was held on August 29, 1940, in the Herrick Room of the Cleveland Medical Library. One hundred and seventy-nine physicians' wives signed the organization's charter, and Mrs. F. D. Olenbury served as the first president. The name of the organization has changed several times during its existence. It was originally called the Women's Auxiliary of the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County Medical Society. In 1976 the name was shortened and changed to Academy of Medicine of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County Auxiliary. Since its inception, the auxiliary has assisted the Academy of Medicine in many of its projects designed to promote and improve public health. For example, the auxiliary assisted in the drive to immunize the public against polio in the 1950s. The organization has also submitted a monthly column to the Cleveland Physician (a publication of the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland) since 1957. The auxiliary strives to promote fellowship among physicians' families through social activities, such as the annual Chrysanthemum Ball.
The Academy of Medicine of Cleveland Auxiliary Records, 1940-1988, consist of minutes, scrapbooks, and Presidents' Books, created each year by the standing president. The Presidents' Books include committee reports, correspondence, mailing lists, membership lists, programs and souvenirs of the year's events. Some individual President's Books are housed in more than one folder.
