The Hayes and McCarthy Family Genealogical Papers were compiled by Jim Hayes and Patricia Boley who successfully traced the genealogy of both families that originated in Limerick, Ireland. The Hayes family were originally from Hospital, County Limerick. The Hayes family farm was occupied by family members until the 1970s. Jim's great great grandfather, Michael Hayes, was the first family member to come to America, and records indicate that he and his brothers emigrated in 1901. It would appear that his plans involved visiting his uncle in Dubuque, Iowa. However, Michael and those with whom he traveled came to and settled in Cleveland, Ohio. Jim's maternal great grandparents were Timothy Mahoney and Ann Hogan. This family is also referenced in this genealogy, and the family home was originally in Dromin, Country Limerick. Boley's grandmother was Margaret McCarthy, who was one of seven children of the McCarthy family who originated in Kildimo, County Limerick.
The Hayes and McCarthy Family Papers, 1897-2003 and undated, consist of correspondence, a family directory, family history, genealogical documents (including reports from Ireland, census records, certificates, maps, passenger records,) a funeral/memorial card, newspaper clippings and, photographs. The collection primarily consists of a family history book created by Patricia Boley in 2003 that has been dismantled and placed in separate folders.
This collection is of value to those seeking information about the Irish community in northeast Ohio. This collection will be of special interest to those seeking information about first generation Irish immigrants and their adaptation to life in the United States.
