The Eli Bond Family of Lake and Geauga Counties, Ohio, came to the Western Reserve in 1803 when Eli Bond (1782-1830), a native of Brookfield, Massachusetts, traveled on horseback to the area that is now Painesville, Ohio. He returned to Massachusetts briefly, but then settled permanently in Ohio in 1805. He, along with his father, Thomas Bond, and a brother, Moses Bond, owned land in the area of Bondstown (now Hambden Township) in Geauga County. Eli sold this land after being empowered to do so by the other proprietors and then opened the first store in the Painesville area. Painesville was then in Geauga County and in 1815, Eli Bond became sheriff of the county, a post he held for four years. He served in the war of 1812 and in 1818, was commissioned major general of the Ninth Division of Ohio Militia. He held this position until his death. Other members of the Bond family that figure in the collection are Eli's father, Thomas Bond (b. 1739), his brothers, Thomas Bond, Jr. (b. 1777) and Moses Bond (b. 1784), his uncle Joseph Bond (b. 1744), and a cousin Solomon Bond (b. 1764). All of these Bonds were descendants of Jonathan Bond (b. 1710) and his wife Mary Harrington Bond of Worcester County, Massachusetts.
The Bond Family Papers, 1806-1836, consist of correspondence among Bond family members, deeds and receipts.
This collection has value for anyone interested in the early settlement of Lake and Geauga Counties in Ohio and the Western Reserve generally. It also serves as a good example of communication between nineteenth century migrants to the Western Reserve and the relatives they left behind.
