Biography of the Daniel Kerr Family

The Daniel Kerr Family resided in the Western Reserve during the nineteenth century. Daniel Kerr settled in Mentor Township, Geauga County, (known as Lake County after 1840), as early as 1822, serving as Justice of the Peace. Kerr's son Levi was born in Mentor but spent his teens in the West Indies and Japan. Returning to the United States, he began a dry goods business in New York City, then moved on to purchase a farm in western Pennsylvania. After discovering oil, he sold the property to Standard Oil of Ohio and moved to Cleveland, Ohio, to begin a career in banking and business. In 1880, as administrator of his cousin Leonard Case, Jr.'s, estate, he became one of the original five trustees and incorporators of the Case School of Applied Science (CSAS). Upon his own death in March 1885, his sister Laura Kerr Axtell donated $100,000 to CSAS to establish the school's first endowed chair, the Kerr Professorship in Mathematics.
