History of the Lumir -Hlahol -Tyl Singing and Dramatic Society

The Lumir-Hlahol-Tyl Singing and Dramatic Society was created from the merger of three separate Cleveland Czech groups. Lumir was founded in 1867 by Vaclav Rychlik for the purpose of singing choral works and songs of Bohemia, and primarily opera. The Hlahol chorus was founded in 1896 and joined Lumir in 1918. Together, as Lumir-Hlahol, they annually produced Czech operas such as Smetana's "Bartered Bride," and "Hubricka." Tyl, a dramatic society, was founded in 1881 under the name Budivoj, renamed itself after Czech national anthem author Josef Tyl in 1903, and joined Lumir-Hlahol in 1940. The group was active into the mid-1970s.
