The St. Andrews Scottish Benevolent Society of Cleveland, Ohio was founded in 1846. The Cleveland Society was a branch of the St. Andrew's Society, an international benevolent organization of Scots with headquarters in Edinburgh, Scotland.
In addition to providing benefits for Scottish immigrants and their families in need of financial aid, the Cleveland Society also founded and maintained a home for aged Scottish people. Founded by the Society in 1919, the Cleveland Scottish Old Folk's Home was maintained until 1951.
The Society also participated in a number of Scottish cultural events throughout the Cleveland area. It held a St. Andrew's Day dinner annually and frequently participated in meetings with various clan associations and Cleveland Scottish groups, including the Cleveland Kilty Band and the Daughters of Scotia.
The St. Andrews Scottish Benevolent Society remained a strong and viable group throughout its first 100 years, experiencing a drop in funds and membership only during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The 1950s, however, witnessed a drastic drop in membership and the Society was forced to dissolve in 1962.
The St. Andrews Scottish Benevolent Society Records, 1846-1962 and undated, consist of minutes, correspondence, legal papers and membership records.
This collection will be useful to researchers studying the history of Cleveland, Ohio, and the Scottish immigrant community there in the nineteenth century and twentieth century. The collection touches upon a number of subjects including the maintenance of the welfare of Scottish people in Cleveland and the continuance of Scottish culture in America. Portions of the minutes relate to efforts to aid destitute Scottish-Americans during the Great Depression of the 1930s and the establishment and dissolution of the Cleveland Scottish Old Folks Home. Genealogists might find the membership records and applications to the Cleveland Scottish Old Folks Home useful.
