History of American Guild of Organists, Cleveland Chapter.

The American Guild of Organists (AGO) is the national professional association serving the organ and choral music fields. The Guild serves approximately 20,000 members throughout the United States, Asia, Australia, and Europe. Founded in 1896 as both an educational and service organization, the Guild, headquartered in New York City, seeks to set and maintain high musical standards and to promote the understanding and appreciation of all aspects of organ and choral music. In any given year, a chapter may host concerts, educational events and social gatherings, have regular monthly meetings, and participate in either a regional or a national convention.

The Cleveland chapter of the American Guild of Organists was established in 1914 and is active in and around the Cleveland area. The chapter publishes its own newsletter, and participates in workshops and programs sponsored by the American Guild of Organists.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of the records of the Cleveland chapter American Guild of Organists, including the chapters' administrative files, publications and scrapbooks. The collection also includes musical scores for two pieces commissioned by the AGO Cleveland Chapter. Please see the Scope and Content notes of individual series and sub-series for more information.

The majority of the materials in the collection were donated to the Cleveland Public Library's Department of Special Collections prior to 2011.

Processing Information

This collection was partially processed and a finding aid prepared by Ryan Moore, Librarian III, Cleveland Public Library. During subsequent processing, materials were kept in the order in which they were found, and the collection reflects the collecting and organizational systems original to the various people contributing to the collection.

A second donation made in June 2011 is unprocessed and consists of 4 binders of administrative and scrapbook materials.


Accruals

The American Guild of Organists plans to continue donating materials to the collection.
