Biography of Emanuel Lasker

Dr. Emanuel Lasker was born on December 24, 1868 in Berlinchen, Prussia, the second of four children. As a child he was sent to Berlin to study mathematics. While in Berlin he lived with his older brother Berthold, who also began to teach him chess. Lasker continued to study chess along with mathematics, excelling in both. Emanuel Lasker was World Chess Champion for 27 years, from 1894-1921, although he remained active in the world of chess for years afterward. Dr. Lasker was also a renowned mathematician and philosopher who moved in the same circles as Albert Einstein, Ernst Cassirer, and Alexander Moszkowski, among other notable scientists and philosophers of the early twentieth century. In 1911 at the age of 42, Dr. Lasker married the wealthy widow Martha Kohn (Bamberger), who was responsible for creating the scrapbooks in this collection, and settled in Berlin. In 1928, Dr. Lasker celebrated his 60th birthday with much recognition from former chess opponents and other illustrious members of his social circle, and he continued to write widely on the subjects of chess, bridge, mathematics, and philosophy. However, in 1933, Dr. Lasker and his wife were forced to escape Germany as Hitler rose to power, eventually settling in New York in 1937. He struggled to support himself in the United States after his advancing age rendered him unable to compete in chess matches. In 1941, Dr. Lasker died of a kidney infection at the age of 72 in New York.

Scope and Content

The Emanuel Lasker Scrapbooks and Medals Collection spans the years 1894-1987, with the bulk of the material dating from the first decades of the twentieth century, and contains a wide variety of material relating to the life and career of Emanuel Lasker, largely compiled by his wife Martha (Kohn) Lasker. The collection and the trunk that contained it were donated to the Cleveland Public Library in 1985 by Dr. Lasker's nephew Edward M. Bamberger. Of special interest in the scrapbooks are materials that document Lasker's tenure as chess champion, including articles from newspapers and magazines from across the globe that chronicle his successes. Other materials include photocopies of correspondence and manuscripts, journals, and medals, as well as scrapbooks containing photographs, articles, documents, cards, photographs, and other miscellaneous ephemera collected and compiled by Martha Lasker.
