Eunice A. Mitchell Bennett went to China in 1922 where she attended language school for two years. During this time she stayed in the C. W. Shoop family's home where she became acquainted with Kathryn Lucille Shoop. Eunice went on to teach at Miller Seminary in Siulaam (Siu Lam), a girls' boarding and day school run by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. She served two terms as a missionary in South China before requesting permanent furlough in 1933 in response to family health needs. Eunice Mitchell Bennett died in 1984 after leaving her China papers to her friend Kathryn Lucille Shoop Allen, who forwarded them to the Center for the Evangelical United Brethren Heritage in 1986.
Series I, Provenance Note, consists of a single hand-written note by the donor, Kathryn Lucille Shoop Allen. The note gives a little background information on Eunice Mitchell Bennett and about her papers. Series II, Personal Correspondence, contains a number of notes and letters sent to Allen during the early 1980s. Series III, Mission Publications, includes two items: a prayer calendar and a missionary directory. These items contain few personal notations. Series IV, Photographs, is the largest series. It consists of three photograph albums and a few loose photos dating between 1912 and 1948. Most of the photos have captions.
There are no restrictions on the use of HC-5.
The Center for the Evangelical United Brethren Heritage is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Please make an appointment with the Curator for access to materials.

This is a small collection featuring photographs and publications documenting Eunice A. Mitchell Bennett's years as a United Brethren missionary in China (1922-1933) and reflecting her long-term friendships with the Ward and Schoop families. The correspondence included in HC-5 does not date from the period of Eunice's missionary work, but instead is from the final years of her life.
