The Matthew C. Kirkpatrick collection consists of photographs, correspondence, arrest logs, identification cards, books, and a scrapbook. It was created by Matthew C. Kirkpatrick who was a Dayton policeman and Chief of Police during the mid-20th century. |

Matthew C. Kirkpatrick was born in Oswego, New York, on April 28, 1902. He married Freda E. Shrader on December 3, 1924. They had one son, Robert M., and one daughter, Gloria E. He was a Dayton policeman and between 1949 and 1955 he was Chief of Police. While in Dayton, he was involved with the Ohio Police Association and was the first Dayton policeman to go to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for training. After retiring from service in Dayton, Kirkpatrick moved to Washington, D.C., to work with the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
Matthew C. Kirkpatrick was the first Dayton policeman to go to the FBI for training. The collection houses photographs of him and J. Edgar Hoover as well as correspondence from Hoover. The collection also contains manuals and books related to police work in Ohio and the city of Dayton. Additionally, Kirkpatrick also kept a detailed scrapbook of his career, which he dedicated to his wife, which houses articles, notes, and correspondence relating to his long career of service to Dayton and the police department. Researchers examining the Matthew C. Kirkpatrick Collection can gain insight into law enforcement during the mid-20th century in Dayton.
