Abstract:
Edith Holsinger was an English teacher, teaching at both Fairmont West High School and Barnes Jr. High School. In 1964, Holsinger aided in the creation of the Kettering Teachers Union and was an active participant until her retirement. The collection consists of administration papers, newsletters, and personal correspondence.

Biography of Edith Holsinger

Edith Holsinger was born in New York City in 1912. She graduated from high school in 1930 and went on to graduate from University of Dayton with a B.S. in 1956. She became an English Teacher teaching both at Fairmont West High School and Barnes Jr. High School. In 1964 Edith Holsinger aided in the creation of the Kettering Teachers Union. She became the union's newsletter editor in 1968 and remained the editor for 14 years until she resigned. She also was the union's corresponding secretary in 1970 and remained the secretary until her retirement. Edith Holsinger also ran for State Representative in 1980. She was greatly involved in various political activities including the presidential campaign for Jimmy Carter. In 1985 Edith Holsinger was named one of Dayton Daily News' Ten Top Women Honorees. She passed away in 2007.

Scope and Content

The Edith Holsinger Collection consists of various newsletters, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, correspondence, and agendas. The collection details the interests of Edith Holsinger, both political and personal.

Series I: Kettering Federation of Teachers, consists of meeting reports from the early meetings of the Kettering Federation of Teachers union. It also contains correspondence from and to the union. This series also has the newsletter from 1968 to 1980 that Edith Holsinger edited for 14 years.

Series II: Kettering City School District, is composed of correspondence and various studies done by the school board to predict statistics like enrollment. It also contains the teacher contact from 1976.

Series III: Kettering Classroom Association, contains the newsletters from 1965 to 1976 that were created by the Kettering Classroom Association. It also includes the Kettering Classroom Association's constitution.

Series IV: Kettering Board of Education, is a large series that contains the school board meetings' agendas from 1976 to 1979. Also in the series is the policy manual for the school board from 1976.

Series V: American Federation of Teachers, contains the federation's newsletter Action and various pamphlets created by the federation. This series provides a brief history of the federation, which was created in 1916 in Illinois. It is one of the fastest growing labor unions in America and it is affiliated with AFL-CIO. Also in this series if the AFT newspaper the American Teacher and a series of booklets that contain newspaper clippings that were published together called AFT in the News.

Series VI: Ohio AFT-CIO, provides information about the Ohio AFL-CIO including its relationship to the AFL. This series contains various correspondences and a large number of New and Views Newsletters that was published by the Ohio AFL-CIO. There are also many newspaper clippings that contain information about the unions everyday operations.

Series VII: Dayton Miami Valley AFT-CIO, consists of meeting minutes, correspondences, and reports. It also contains the constitution of the organization. It has newspaper clippings that were saved by Edith Holsinger. This series also shows a connection between the OHIO AFT-CIO and the AFT.

Series VIII: Ohio Federation of Teachers, is a small series that contains various items including, mailing lists, their constitution, and financial reports from 1980 to 1981. This series provides a little background information about the Ohio Federation of Teachers.

Series IX: Union Teacher Press Association, contains a large collection of the newsletter Union teacher Press that was received by Edith Holsinger from 1968 to 1972. Various correspondences are also present that were sent to and from the Union Teacher Press Association.

Series X: City Teacher Unions and News, is a small series that contains various newsletters from several city schools and contains various newspaper clippings about city schools including Dayton, Sugarcreek, and Centerville that were saved by Edith Holsinger. Also included are newsletters from various city teachers' union including Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Toledo. This series provides some insight into how various teachers unions from different cities were connected.

Series XI: Educational Testing Service, contains newsletters from 1976 to 1978 that were created by the Educational Testing Service and sent out to various teachers including Edith Holsinger. It also contains a news release from 1978.

Series XII: State Federations of Teachers, consists of various newsletters from various state federations of teachers including Pennsylvania and Minnesota, which were mailed to Edith Holsinger.

Series XIII: Ohio Education Association, contains various newspaper clippings that were saved by Edith Holsinger. The newspaper clippings contain information about the Ohio Education Association.

Series XIV: Political, contains various political newsletters that were received by Edith Holsinger including The Ohio Voter and the Ohio Civil Liberties. In this series there is various newspaper clipping that were saved by Edith Holsinger herself which shows what she views as important issues. The newspaper clippings are from 1974 to about 1984.

Series XV: Jimmy Carter, contains a few correspondences between Edith Holsinger and Jimmy Carter. It also includes an invitation to Carter's inauguration sent to Edith Holsinger.

Series XVI: Edith Holsinger, is a small series that contains a small number of correspondences sent to or received by Edith Holsinger. It also contains various Jewish newsletters that were saved by Edith Holsinger and are from 1969 to 1980. Two scrapbooks are also located in this series, which are travel scrapbooks that contain a large number of postcards that were sent to Edith Holsinger by her husband or were collected by Edith Holsinger herself.
