History of Wright State University, Boonshoft School of Medicine

Still in its infancy, Wright State University was building a partnership with the surrounding communities. In the Dayton area alone there are seven hospitals, seeing a need to provide students to fulfill intern position, along with access to professionals, the university wanted to have a school of medicine. In 1972, Congress passed the Veterans Administration Medical School Assistance and Health Manpower Training Act providing financial support for establishing five new U.S. medical schools, including one at Wright State University. The school received an additional one million dollars from Virginia Kettering and $500,000 from the Fordham Foundation for a medical library. The medical school was established in 1973 by the Ohio General Assembly. The School of Medicine opened to students in 1976, with this class graduating in 1980. The medical school officially changed their name to the Boonshoft School of Medicine in 2005, honoring the philanthropist Oscar Boonshoft. An addition to the building came in 2008 when renovations were done to the former Frederick A. White Health Center for Ambulatory Care for a new Medical Education Center. Since its creation, the school as graduated around 3,000 medical doctors practicing across the United States.
