Following three special organizational meetings sponsored by the Miami Valley Carpenters District Council, Local Union 684, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America was called to order October 23, 1940. Local 684 began with only 21 members working at six Dayton area lumber firms. By the 1970s the membership had swelled to over 80.
The materials within the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 684 are divided into six record groups or series; Administrative records, Financial Statements, Correspondence, Contract Proposals and Agreements, Convention Materials, and Directories, Manuals, and Newsletters. The arrangement of the files is chronological within each series or subseries.
Series I, Administrative Records, are divided into five subseries. Series I, subseries 1, contains the Membership Minutes, 1940-1946, 1950-1967, 1972-1974 (six bound volumes), Officer's Attendance Lists, and information about the membership. Series I, subseries 2, contains the Executive Board Minutes of the General Executive Board of the UBCJ of A, 1962, 1964, 1965. Series I, subseries 3 contains the Minutes of the Miami Valley Carpenters District Council, 1956, 1961, 1962. Series I, subseries 4, contains the minutes of various committee meetings, 1961, 1962, 1967. Series I, subseries 5, contains amended constitutions of UBCJ of A and the constitution of the Dayton-Miami Valley AFL-CIO.
Series II, Financial Statements, contains financial records of the UBCJ of A, UBCJ of A Local 684, and the Miami Valley Carpenters District Council. They were issued monthly, but there are gaps in the files.
Series III contains correspondence from the UBCJ of A national officers, and communications with inter-union affiliates, 1958-1967.
Series IV contains numerous contract proposals and agreements between the UBCJ of A and several corporations. The span dates for this material are from 1941-1967.
Series V contains proceedings and journal reports from various UBCJ of A and Ohio State Council of Carpenters conventions, 1946-1966.
Series VI contains a variety of directories, manuals, and newsletters pertinent to the UBCJ of A and its range, activities, and programs.
