Abstract:
The Alpha Phi sorority was first created at Syracuse University on October 10, 1872, to provide a "tie which unites, a circle of friends" for women young and old all around the world. The Dayton Alumnae Chapter was officially founded on January 4, 1956. The chapter exists to this day as a form of contact for the alumnae in the Dayton, Ohio area. The collection contains scrapbooks documenting the Alpha Phi sorority alumnae from various universities who are either from or presently living in Dayton. It shows their involvements with the sorority and with other life endeavors.

History of Dayton Alpha Phi Alumnae Association

Alpha Phi International Women's Fraternity is a sorority that was first created at Syracuse University on October 10, 1872. Its purpose was to provide a "tie which unites, a circle of friends" for women young and old all around the world. The sorority still remains presently with 170 active chapters and over 200,000 initiated members. The Dayton Alumnae Chapter was officially founded on January 4, 1956. The chapter exists to this day as a form of contact for the alumnae in the Dayton area. The organization is also involved with forging alumnae relations with current members of Alpha Phi, fundraising for charities, and contributing to the local community.

Scope and Content

This collection is comprised of fourteen scrapbooks, dating from 1953 to 1983, which detail the affiliations, events, and lives of Alpha Phi alumnae and their families living within the Dayton, Ohio area. The scrapbooks are arranged chronologically and contain newspaper clippings, photographs, and correspondence.

Statement of Arrangement

The intellectual arrangement of the collection is chronological. However, scrapbooks have been physically arranged according to size. Scrapbooks that fit into boxes are arranged chronologically within. Scrapbooks that are too large have been individually boxed or wrapped.
