Biography of George H. and Alice A. Gott

George H. Gott (1898-1986) was mayor of Hudson, Ohio, from 1924 to 1926. A lifelong Hudson resident, he was a graduate of Hudson High School and owner of Gott Hardware on Main Street. The business remained a prominent Hudson landmark from its establishment in 1926 until its closure in 1966. In 1948, Gott became the director of the Twinsburg Bank and was elected chairman of the board in 1968, a position he held for the next 15 years. In addition, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the First Congregational Church of Hudson. He was married to Alice A. (Stewart) Gott (1894-1977), a former Hudson school teacher. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the First Congregational Church of Hudson.

Scope and Content

The collection documents the personal and professional lives of George and Alice Gott. Alice Gott's papers include a physics notebook, an assortment of personal and professional materials kept in a loose leaf notebook, and school records while she was a teacher. George Gott's materials include some miscellaneous material, including a diploma, a mortgage deed for his parents' home, an announcement of the opening of his hardware store, an oversize 1931 calendar advertising Gott's store, and a booklet, "The first fifty years: 1912-1962" of the Twinsburg Banking Company, where Gott served as Vice President and Director. A tie and a dicky belonging to Gott are also part of this collection (located in the artifact collection). Also, his papers include three letters while mayor of Hudson.

The collection also includes photographs and postcards. Among the photographs are a Hudson school class from 1907 (perhaps picturing George Gott?) and a portrait of an unidentified female. The postcards include views of the town hall and area churches as well as a few images of Hudson resident William Branch. The collection includes some collected newspaper articles, primarily articles about the Gott family.
