Biography of Kelly Wills, Jr. (1928-1971)
Kelly Wills, Jr. was a man who led a life of fascinating duality. By trade, he was a hard-working laborer at a steel mill
in Middletown, Ohio. But when he was not working in the heat and pressure of the mill, Kelly devoted his attention to the
pastime that truly defined him: the collecting and sharing of books, magazines, papers, photographs, and other materials relating
to World War I aviation history. In this field, he was regarded by many peers (and by many of his own heroes) as an incredibly
studious historian, generous with his knowledge and enthusiastic in his correspondences with researchers and veterans alike.
Kelly was born on October 17, 1928 in Middletown, Ohio, the son of Kelly E. Wills, Sr. and Betty Alice Wills. After graduating
from high school in 1947, he served for two years in the United States Army (1950-52). Upon returning home to Middletown,
he spent twenty years working in the Hot Strip Department of the Armco Steel Corporation.
As a valued member of the editorial staff of Cross & Cockade Journal, a magazine and historical society dedicated to WWI aviation history, Kelly wrote several articles and also originated and
edited his own column, "Wind Soc." He was a frequent collaborator and often contributed materials and other assistance to
his fellow researchers in the field.
Kelly's interest in aviation was described as being directed "not to the machines, but to the men." He was deeply interested
in the personal narratives and experiences of those who served in the war; in fact, he conducted and recorded one-on-one interviews
with numerous veterans, and he maintained personal correspondence with a great many WWI pilots from various corners of the
world. In April 1971, Kelly was invited to Germany by his friend and research subject, WWI veteran pilot Hans Waldhausen,
to attend a reunion of the pilots who flew in the legendary German "Flying Circus" fighter squadron.
Kelly passed away suddenly of a heart attack on Christmas Day, 1971. He and his wife, Mary, had six children together. This
collection of materials has been donated by his family, in hopes that his vast pool of knowledge and his contributions to
WWI aviation studies will help those who continue to be interested in the field - just as Kelly so often extended a helping
hand to his peers in his own lifetime.
