William Waddell Boyd served as president of Western College, Oxford, Ohio. He was born on March 8, 1862 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Boyd was educated in the public schools of Lancaster, Ohio. He attended Muskingum College for one year and graduated for Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio in 1884. Dr. Boyd held various positions in education throughout his career. He accepted the position as principal of a grammar school in Cambridge, Ohio and was elected a principal of Crawfish Institute in Berne Township near Lancaster, Ohio. In 1890, he was selected as principal of the high school in Marietta, Ohio. The following year he was promoted to Superintendent of the Marietta School District. In 1898, he was appointed to the State of Ohio Board of Examiners. The same year he accepted the position of Superintendent of Schools in Painesville, Ohio for the purpose of establishing closer relationships between high schools and colleges. In 1907, Dr. W. O. Thompson, then president of the Ohio State University invited Dr. Boyd to accept a position as Dean of the newly formed College of Education. He accepted the position and organized the curriculum for the college, selected a faculty and served in that position from 1907 to 1914. In that same year, the trustees of Western College selected him as the president.
During Boyd's term many changes occurred on Western's campus. Patterson Place became the home of the president; Ernst Nature Theater was dedicated. Four buildings were constructed: Kumler Chapel, Presser Hall, Mary Lyon Hall and the Western Lodge. The first artist-in-residence at any college or University Edgar Stillman Kelley was selected at Western College. President Boyd began tours of Europe for students. During the United States involvement in War World I, students called "Farmettes" helped the school by planting Victory Gardens. Dr. Boyd retired in 1931. Dr. Boyd's daughter Marion was educated at Western College. After graduating she taught at Western and later at Miami. She married Walter Havighurst, a professor at Miami. Boyd died on February 4, 1944.
