Biography of William Jasper McSurely Family

The McSurely family included William Jasper McSurely (1834-1929) who graduate from Miami University in 1856 and graduated from Oxford (Ohio) United Presbyterian Seminary in 1858. Ordained on May 5, 1859, he pastored churches in Oxford, Ohio, from 1858 to 1866; Kirkwood, Illinois in 1867 and 1868; Loveland, Ohio in 1869; and Hillsboro, Ohio, from 1868 to 1899. He was president of the Miami University Board of Trustees from 1887 to 1900, serving as University president pro tem in 1899. He also served as University Librarian from 1899 to 1909.

In 1860, McSurely married Huldah Taylor (1837-1918) from Illinois. Three of their six children lived to maturity. William Harvey McSurely (1865-1943) graduated from Wooster College in 1886. Admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1889, he served in the Illinois General Assembly in 1905-06; in 1907, was elected to a Superior Court Judge for Cook County; and from 1912 until his death, served in the First District Appellate Court. Ella Glenn McSurely (1868-1943 was one of Miami's first women students, graduating with the A.B. in 1901. After attending Pratt Library School, she served as Miami University assistant librarian, the school's first professionally trained library worker, from 1903 to 1911. James Edward McSurely (1874-1929) attended Miami University and Cincinnati Law School. He worked as various times as a lawyer, bank clerk, and salesman, and resided in Hamilton, Ohio, at the time of his death.
