Baseball has been played at Miami since the late 1860's, when it existed as a club sport. By the 1890's, Miami had a "Varsity Nine" which played other area schools, and intramural indoor baseball. In 1911, Miami dropped intercollegiate baseball due to lack of financial support. Intercollegiate baseball returned in 1915, with Miami as a member of the Ohio Conference. From 1925 to 1939, Miami was a member of the Buckeye Conference. After a period of no affiliation with any conference, Miami joined the Mid-American Conference in 1948. As a member of the MAC, Miami baseball has won three MAC tournament championships, and a number of players have gone on to success in the major leagues, including infielders Bill Doran and Tim Naehring, and pitcher Charlie Liebrandt.
