Biography of James Purdy

James Otis Purdy (July 17, 1914 - March 13, 2009) was an American novelist, short story-writer, poet, and playwright who debuted in 1956. Purdy was born in Hicksville, Ohio, and attended Bowling Green State College (now Bowling Green State University), the University of Chicago and the University of Puebla in Mexico. His most well-known works are the novels "Malcolm" and "The Nephew.":

Scope and Content

The James Purdy papers span from 1956 to 1973 and document part of Purdy's literary career. The collection includes a 1956 letter to John Dos Passos found laid in a purchased book; a portfolio entitled "Sunshine is an only child" containing correspondence to his editor, drafts, galleys, and finished work; and two sketchbooks of drawings.
