Guide to the Almanac Collection

Scope and Content

The collection encompasses a variety of almanacs published over nearly a 200 year period of time from different parts of the United States. 247 almanacs dating from 1771 through 1967 are represented in the collection. Materials are arranged chronologically and are contained in 11 boxes. Each almanac is documented by year, title, publisher and place of publication. The types of almanacs consist of general almanacs, agricultural, political, medical and commercial. Information within the almanacs includes calendars, astronomical information, predictions, literature, jokes and agricultural data. Before newspapers became widely available, a primary source of information was the almanac. Today these resources serve as cultural and factual illustrations of early American life.
