Biography of Luella Pearl Pemberton

Luella Pearl Pemberton (LPP) was born in Roseville, Ohio in 1894, and she attended Ohio University from 1916 to 1921 earning a B.S. in Education. LPP was active in a number of organizations on campus including the Philomathean Literary Society, the Y.W.C.A. and the Educators Club. LPP lived in Boyd Hall while attending Ohio University, and her scrapbook suggests that she formed close friendships with the other girls in that hall. After graduating from Ohio University, LPP was employed as an instructor at Fairview High School near Dayton, Ohio in 1937. She later taught at the Fairborn High School near Kettering, Ohio. She never married.

Scope and Content

The Luella Pearl Pemberton (LPP) collection dates from 1921 and contains a 94-page scrapbook, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and copies of the alumni newsletter The Ohio University Bulletin. Within designated spaces in the scrapbook, LPP recorded personal reflections, memories of friends, quotes, influential classes, clubs and social activities, football scores and the names of preferred professors. Using the scrapbook as a journal, LPP made numerous entries throughout 1921 that document her weekly activities as well as her personal feelings and reactions to college life at Ohio University. The scrapbook also contains pictures of LPP with her friends. These photographs were taken on campus grounds and original buildings serve as the background in many shots. Other frequent backdrops for photographs were the grounds around the Athens State Hospital grounds (the Ridges) where LPP and her friends had picnics. LPP's scrapbook contains several photos of friends posing in front of the fountain that once stood on the grounds as well as of the alligator who once lived in the fountain. Also included in the scrapbook are postcards of campus buildings, programs from special events attended by LPP, newspaper clippings from the college paper The Green and White, letters from friends, and numerous souvenirs from various occasions including photos from her graduation day and the tassel from her mortarboard. LPP's materials are arranged in one large green scrapbook with the state seal of Ohio stamped on the cover. Some of the pages in the scrapbook have come loose and there are some items that have come unglued. Most of the materials are in good condition, but work should be done to prevent further damage to the book. The scrapbook is placed in one large, flat box.
