The Athens International Film Festival was founded in 1968. The Athens Video Festival was later added to the event in 1974. As of 2009, the festivals still took place. The festivals are sponsored by the Athens Center for Film and Video in association with Ohio University's College of Fine Arts. Films are prescreened by a committee comprised of artists, students, and community members who watch all films and videos submitted to the festival competition and then vote on which films and videos to present to the public. Cash prizes are awarded by jurors selected to judge films and videos in the categories of documentary, experimental, narrative and animation. Films and videos are presented at the Athena Cinema on Court Street, the Athena Grand on East State Street, in the Baker Center theater and also at Stuart's Opera House in Nelsonville.
The Athens International Film Festival and Video Festival records span from 1969 to 1981 and document the activities of these events in Athens, Ohio. The records are organized into three series: 1. Athens International Film Festival; 2. Athens Video Festival; and 3. Newspaper Clippings.
