George Washington Cable (1844-1925) was na American novelist notable for the realism of his portrayals of Creole life in his native Lousiana. Contemporary and friend of Mark Twain.
Cable wrote this letter to Hillis of Des Moines, Iowa acknowledging receipt of a magazine story and offers apologies for not having time to read and criticize it. "...I hope you will make allowance for a poor fellow who has a rabbit's race to run and only a small speed to run it with." He writes that he felt quite honored to be asked to review it for her.
