Abstract: |
The GER Task Force was established by the YSU Academic Senate to research the creation of a general education model for use
at Youngstown State Members represented a broad cross-section of academia. In 1998, Dr. William Jenkins was named Coordinator
of General Education and the GER Committee was formed. By 2001, a general education model was in place at YSU and the Committee
issued its Report on General Education to (the) North Central Association.

History of General Education Requirements Task Force Committee
During the early 1990s, discussion began regarding the establishment of a curriculum common to all disciplines taught at Youngstown
State University. A GER Task Force was created, which submitted a general education model to the Academic Senate. Debate on
the model began prior to YSU's decennial accreditation through the North Central Association, but did not conclude until after
the NCA visit.
The model passed by the Senate was goal driven, thereby permitting key outcomes to be assessed, and made use of "intensive
courses," e.g., courses that have a writing, oral communication, or critical thinking component attached to them. It also
made provision for the continued involvement of faculty in the review processed involved with general education.
In 1998, the Senate established the General Education Committee. Dr. William Jenkins of the History Department was selected
to serve as the committee's General Education Coordinator. By the following year, academic departments were developing courses
and submitting them for approval. Soon thereafter, a manual for advisors was prepared, workshops were held, and explanatory
information was included in the Youngstown State University Bulletin and the Student Schedule of Classes.
By 2001, the new general education curriculum was in place, with ongoing assessments taking place when needed.
Scope and Content
The archival material preserved herein includes the general records of the GER Task ForceICommittee, including correspondence,
meeting agenda and minutes, and committee reports. Of particular interest to the researcher may be the following: The nine
major subcommittees dealing with intensive areas of study (Series III)
The general reports prepared by the Task ForceICommittee (Series IV) The Report on General Education to (the) North Central
Association (2001), which provides a decent summary of the activities of the GER Committee and the establishment of the general
education curriculum at YSU.
