Biography of Biography or History

In 1888, the Youngstown (Ohio) branch of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) began offering evening classes in various subjects to local residents. In 1908, a course in commercial law was offered, with nine men registered. This was the Y's first college-level offering and is considered to be the foundation for Youngstown State University. In 1921, the Youngstown Association School of the YMCA was officially designated as the Youngstown Institute of Technology"; however, it was frequently referred to as "Youngstown College," an appellation that would not become official until the Institute was formally renamed as such in 1928. In 1955, the name changed to The Youngstown University. After being invited by Ohio Governor James Rhodes to join the state's publically-supported colleges and universities, The Youngstown University became Youngstown State University in 1967. While managed by the President and other administrators, it is the YSU Board of Trustees that approves university appointments, established policies, and sets each annual budget. Nine trustees are appointed by the Governor of Ohio and are selected from the ranks of community leaders, businessmen, professionals, and other distinguished local citizens. Each serves a term of nine years. In addition, two student trustees each serve a two-year term at the pleasure of the Governor and upon the recommendation of the YSU Student Government.

Scope and Content

The documents in this collection included minutes and supporting documentation dating from August 1967 to the present day. The presidencies of Albert Pugsley, John Coffelt, Neil Humphrey, Leslie Cochran, David Sweet, Cynthia Anderson, Randy Dunn, and James Tressel come to light, as to the evolving priorities of the Board. This is an ongoing collection; minutes of the full board will be added as they are made available. Available committee and sub-committee minutes are included up to 2014. Committee minutes created after that year are stored electronically in Archives & Special Collections and are available upon request, but not online. No paper copies of committee minutes will be added to the collection. Online Access Minutes of the full board are available online through the Maag Library website at
