History of Association for Women in Psychology records

The Association for Women in Psychology (AWP) was founded in 1969 at the American Psychological Associations annual convention as a professional venue for addressing women's issues brought forth by the new women's liberation movement. These issues include employment discrimination, sexual harassment, lack of research and theory on women, and sexism.

In 1973, AWP lobbied for the establishment of an American Psychological Association (APA) Division of the Psychology of Women (Division 35). AWP worked with Division 35 to facilitate the creation of a Women's Program Office at APA's national headquarters. AWP is an incorporated, not-for-profit scientific and educational feminist organization devoted to reevaluating and reformulating the role that psychology and the mental health field generally play within women's lives.

Presently, AWP has over 2,000 members and it sponsors regional and national conferences on feminist psychology, disseminates several annual awards and publishes an official newsletter. In order to promote a feminist approach to research, teaching, and mental health, AWP collaborates with other similar organizations. This organization also maintains an active liaison program with other feminist and psychological organizations.

In 1979 AWP became an official Non-Governmental Organization of the United Nations.
