History of Academy of Family Psychology archives

The Academy of Family Psychology was founded in 1958 by several psychologists interested in marital and family therapy. There was a resurgence of interest in the 1970s and 1980s, which led to the development of the American Board of Family Psychology. During the 1980s, the Academy became the Division of Family Psychology of the American Psychological Association (APA). The American Board of Family Psychology became a specialty board of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). In the early 1990s the ABPP reorganized and became the "parent board" with multiple boards beneath it. Each specialty board has an Academy so that the Board will only serve as a credentialing organization for professional psychologists. The Academy serves as the political arm of the Board. In 1991 the Academy of Family Psychology was born anew. The purpose of the Academy is to advocate and lobby for individuals who hold a Diplomate in Family Psychology and for the field of family psychology in general. The Academy also recruits persons from the field of Family Psychology to become Diplomates of the American Board of Family Psychology.
