Biography of Marianne Simmel

Marianne Simmel was born on January 3, 1923 in Jena, Germany. She immigrated to the United States when she was 17 and received her PhD from Harvard University at 26. She worked as a teacher and researcher at the University of Illinois at Chicago and later at Brandeis University with a special interest in cognitive neuropsychology. Simmel spent her career focusing on the phantom limb phenomenon in children and adults with neurological defects. She was interested in cognitive psychology which included the arts, specifically mimes and the study of this symbolic art form. Working with Fritz Heider, she co-authored "An Experimental Study of Apparent Behavior" that explored animacy and the human instinct for storytelling. She retired from Brandeis University in 1979. Simmel died March 24, 2010 in North Eastham, Massachusetts at 87 years old.
