Biography of Alvin Zander

Alvin Zander was born on October 13, 1913 in Detroit, Michigan. He did his undergraduate work at the University of Michigan and received his bachelor's degree in 1936. He received his master's degree in Science and Public Health in 1937 and then went on to get his Ph.D. in 1942. He did postdoctoral work at the University of Chicago and State University of Iowa. He was the director of the Research Center for Group Dynamics in the Institute of Social Research from 1959 - 1978. His research was focused primarily on groups and the nature of group goals, how they are chosen, and how they influence group performance. He retired on May 1, 1981 from his faculty position at the University of Michigan. He continued to write and publish after he retired. He died in 1998 at 84 years old.
