The University of Akron's first yearbook was published in 1880 under the title Argo, in recognition of Jason and the Argonauts. The first yearbook was published with a staff of seven people, including an editor-in-chief, a business manager, and a treasurer. Two years later, the staff changed the title to The Buchtel through the 1908 edition. In 1911, the title then changed to the Tel-Buch which it remained until its last publication in 2008.
Publication of the yearbook has been sporadic at times, especially during the early years. The Argo was published in 1880; the Buchtel was published in 1882, 1887, 1889, 1893, 1894, and 1908. The Tel-Buch was published 1911 through 2008, with the exception of 1934, 1943, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1950, and 1951.
The Tel-Buch provides a perspective of university activities by including photos of fraternities and sororities, sports teams, and various campus events. Students managed the production and distribution of the yearbook with the assistance of a faculty adviser. The yearbook's financial success depended on advertisement and purchases.
The Tel-Buch Office Records mainly contain photographs (Series I) taken to produce the annual yearbook. Many of these photographs were published in the yearbook; some were not published. Student photographers took a majority of the photographs, so they document campus from a student perspective. The subjects covered in the photographs include athletics, student groups and organizations, social activities, and candid campus photographs. A relatively small number of photographic negatives (Series II) and slides (Series III) exist in the records. Series IV contains office files that document the production of the yearbook. Included in this series are editors' duties, page layouts, and correspondence. The records are arranged by year and alphabetically therein.
