History of American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Akron Section

Organized and chartered in May 1937, Akron was the 10th section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). Dr. Harlan L. Trumbull of the B. F. Goodrich Company called a meeting of Akron's leading chemical engineers and discussed the need for a local professional organization. The Akron Section was chartered with Dr. Trumbull as chairman, John P. Maider as Vice Chairman, and William Burt of Goodrich as Secretary-Treasurer. Charter members included John Street of The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, George Allison of Goodrich, R. P. Dinsmore of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Frank Schoenfeld of Goodrich, and Maurice Knight, Jr. of The M. A. Knight Company. Charter members of the Akron Section were instrumental in the development of synthetic rubber and related process equipment. They became the technical leaders in the rubber industry through the 1970s. Beginning in the 1980's, the main source of members to the Akron Section was from The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. This continues today, however, half of the section's members are from numerous small to mid-size companies in the Akron area. These companies include Advanced Elastomer Systems, Chemstress Consultants, Gojo Industries, and Norton. The Akron Section is fortunate to have many active members who are retired engineers from the rubber industry.

Scope and Content

Materials in the records include correspondence, meeting minutes, news clippings, membership rosters, group bulletins, public relations information, and other materials relating to the organization.
