History of Biography or History

The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is a national Quaker organization devoted to service, development, and peace programs throughout the world. Their work is based on the belief in the worth of every person, and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice.

The national organization was founded by Quakers in 1917 to enable Quakers and other young pacifists to serve during World War I, while being faithful to their commitment to non-violence. In other words, it gave young conscientious objectors ways to serve without joining the military or taking lives. The AFSC also strove to serve both humanity and country while being faithful to their commitment to non-violence. During the First World War, AFSC members drove ambulances, ministered to the wounded, and stayed on in Europe after the armistice to rebuild war-ravaged communities.

After the Great War, AFSC volunteers engaged in reconstruction projects, feeding programs, and medical assistance in Germany, Russia, and Poland. At home in the U.S., AFSC worked to advance race relations, socio-economic equality, and peace education. With the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, AFSC provided food and clothing to civilians on both sides of the conflict. During World War II, AFSC assisted refugees in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. After the war, Quaker volunteers contributed to the massive effort to provide relief and reconstruction in countries devastated by the war.

For these efforts, AFSC, along with the British Friends Service Council, accepted one of the most prestigious awards in the world-the Nobel Peace Prize-on behalf of Quakers worldwide. The prize recognized 300 years of Quaker efforts to heal rifts and oppose war. In particular, it named the work done by the two recipient Quaker organizations during and after the two world wars to feed starving children and help Europe rebuild.

As post-war reconstruction gave way to the Cold War, AFSC worked to promote peace and understanding between peoples and ideologies in conflict. Institutes, exchanges, and seminars brought together youth, educators, scientists, and political leaders from many different countries and backgrounds.

The AFSC was a ubiquitous ally throughout the Civil Rights movement. From the organization's relationship with the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to programs in the areas of integrated housing communities, employment on merit, training in non-violent protest, voter education, and school desegregation and integration, the AFSC provided leadership and support. During the 1960s and '70s, the AFSC also worked on giving aid to civilians on both sides of the Vietnam War and providing draft counseling.

While work in the areas of international development and relations continued, the AFSC began to work more actively with marginalized groups in U.S. society developing programs designed to raise the voices of women and peoples of color from the 1970s through the 2000s. This includes lobbying and production of resources against the death penalty, solitary confinement, and inhumane treatment in U.S. prisons; anti-apartheid activism and divestment from South Africa; and research and exposure into the role of the Military Industrial Complex in U.S. society. Its work also included investigation into US government surveillance programs and violation of personal privacy; Mexico/U.S. Border work and lobbying for reform of U.S. immigration policy; and support to Native American rights, issues and communities. They also worked on establishing economic development programs in Asia, Africa, and Latin America and working with numerous communities such as immigrants, migrant workers, prisoners, and low-income families on education and justice issues and building peaceful communities all over the world.

In modern times, AFSC also has worked throughout the world in conflict zones, in areas affected by natural disasters, and in oppressed communities to address the root causes of war and violence. Today, the AFSC does more than advocate against war and promote peace, but strives to change the culture, situations, and systems that lead to violence by working person-by-person and community-by-community.

The Akron chapter of the AFSC educates and organizes residents of Northeast Ohio around issues of economic and political justice, advocating for the national "Move to Amend" proposed constitutional amendment to abolish corporate "personhood" and money as speech; sane and humane federal, state, and local budget priorities and tax and monetary policies; and creating and nurturing local economic alternatives, like the Akron Time Bank. In this work to change culture, laws, and the U.S. Constitution, AFSC holds forums, workshops, community meetings, mass actions, citizen petition campaigns, and meetings with public officials.

The national Archives of the American Friends Service Committee are housed in AFSC's central office in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. However, the records of local AFSC chapters, such as the Akron group, have made their way into local repositories, like The University of Akron Archival Services.

Scope and Content

The AFSC Records document the activities and concerns of the local Akron, Ohio branch of the AFSC from the 1960's until the early 2000's. The records contain materials published by the AFSC itself in addition to various other sources that the AFSC collected. The materials have been separated into two series: subject files and audiovisual materials. The subject files have been organized thematically into numerous sub-series. These include for example general information about the AFSC, reports on countries around the world, criminal justice, the draft and conscientious objection, the economy, civil liberties and human rights, peace movements, and war and conflict. The audio-visual series consists mostly of reel-to-reel audio recordings of the Plug-In (1975-1980) and Hearing the Light (1985-1986) radio series. These have been organized by the original numbers assigned to the recordings by the AFSC.

Statement of Arrangement

The American Friends Service Committee Records are divide into two series: Series I Subject Files and Series II: Audiovisual Materials. Series I: Subject Files is organized by subject matter and then chronologically. Series II: Audiovisual Materials is organized in chronological order.
