Abstract:	The American Legion Post 209 was founded in Akron, Ohio in 1919 by the United States Congress (Legion). The records include minutes, financial records, correspondence, photographs, employee files, membership lists, articles of incorporation, and the constitution and bylaws of the post. History of Historical Background

The American Legion was founded in 1919 by congress (Legion). Post 209 was chartered that same year. It is located at 106 South Arlington Street, Akron Ohio. The American Legion is a veteran's organization; it is non-political and non-sectarian, military rank does not exist in the organization. Meetings of Post 209 would be held on the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month. The Goodyear Employee Files were donated to Post 209 by Goodyear, as many of employees left to fight in World War I and later joined the legion. During the war, Goodyear sent letters to deployed employees and their families asking for photographs of the soldiers in order to make an Honor Roll book of the employees.

The records are divided into five series: Administrative Records, Subject Files, Photographs, Employee Records, and Letters. Series I: Administrative Records contain materials from 1920-2005 and is divided into the following subseries: Finance, Correspondence, Members List, and Meeting Minutes. Series II: Subject Files contains materials from 1920-2009 in one box and is divided into the Constitution and By-Laws, Speeches, Booklets, Catalogues, and Pamphlets, and Miscellaneous. Series III: Photographs contains ten boxes of materials dating from 1919 to 2000 divided into the Photographs of the Legion, Photographs of Legion Commanders, and Scrapbooks. Series IV: Employee Files contains four boxes of materials from World War I divided into subseries that are arranged alphabetically by last name. Series V: Letters contains one box of materials dating from 1919 to 1920 divided into subseries.

Scope and Content

The records were created by the American Legion Post 209 in Akron, Ohio. The collection consist of meeting minutes, financial records, correspondence, subject files, photographs, employee files, membership lists, articles of incorporation, and the constitution and bylaws of the post. The materials date from 1919-2005.

Statement of Arrangement

Series I: Administrative Records and Series II: Subject Files are arranged chronologically. Series III: Photographs and Series V: Letters were kept in their original order. Series IV: Employee Files are arranged alphabetically.
