Akron's Buckley Post #12, Department of Ohio, Grand Army of the Republic is part of a national organization founded in 1866 for men who served in the U.S. Army and Navy during the Civil War. Named for Colonel Lewis P. Buckley of the 29th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. One of the important tasks of GAR posts originated in 1868. General John A. Logan, then commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic issued an order setting aside May 30 of each year to hold such memorial exercises as the posts might deem appropriate.
Activities of each post are reflected in the minutes and other related documents. This collection includes Buckley Post #12 minutes from October 13, 1870 to March 12, 1938. No minutes are available for the period September 1889 through February 1896. In addition, inserted in some volumes are postcards, newspaper clippings, resolutions of respect in memory of veterans who passed away, and other type of correspondence.
Two additional volumes are also part of this collection. The first of them is a report of the relief fund for Buckley Post #12. Even though this volume is labeled 1906-1907 Relief Fund Buckley Post #12, the report goes beyond 1907. It covers the period between 1906 through 1938. Reports on individual pages are simply an account of receipts and expenditures. The second item is entitles 1929 Survivors. On the first page of this volume an expanded title is as follows: Surviving Members of Buckley Post, January 12, 1929. In most cases there is one entry per page showing dues payments for 1929-1931. Many pages are blank.
