Biography of Dr. Kathleen L. Endres
Dr. Kathleen L “Kitty” Endres is a Distinguished Professor Emerita of Communication at The University of Akron. She received
a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Arts in Journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park. She completed
her Ph.D. in History at Kent State University in 1985. She has been a Professor at the University of Akron since 1987 and
was previously an Instructor at the School of Journalism at Kent State University (1976-1978), an Instructor of Communication
at Hiram College (1984-1985), and an Assistant Professor of Journalism at Bowling Green State University (1985-1987). While
at the University of Akron, she also served as the Director of Women’s Studies (1999-2001), Head of Media Area for the School
of Communication (2002-2006), and the Interim Director of the School of Communication (2009-2010). Dr. Endres has taught numerous
graduate and undergraduate courses over her long and distinguished career including Documentary Writing, The History of American
Documentaries, and New Media Writing, to name a few. A trained historian, Endres does research on magazines, journalism history,
and women’s studies. Dr. Endres has also authored over 80 book chapters, 25 scholarly articles, and numerous books on women’s
history and local history including Akron’s Better Half: Women’s Clubs and the Humanization of the City (Akron, OH: University
of Akron Press, 2006), Rosie the Rubber Worker (Kent, OH: Kent State University Press, 2000), and Akron Women (Chicago, IL:
Arcadia Publishing, 2004). She is also an Emmy and Telly-award winning producer of documentary films, including Rebels on
Lake Erie (2012) and BLIMP! Sports, Broadcasting and the Goodyear Airship (2016).
Scope and Content
The Dr. Kathleen L. Endres Collection is comprised of her personal papers including publications, documentary films, writings,
research files, and subject files. The collection also includes collected materials assembled and used by Dr. Endres during
her career as professor, historian, author, documentary filmmaker, and community volunteer. These materials include publications,
printed material, photographs, audio-visual material, and artifacts relating to the history of The University of Akron and
Akron and Summit County, Ohio, mostly women’s history, particularly the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) and the
Women’s History Project, the history of the tire and rubber industry and lighter-than-air flight, and transportation history.
There are annual accruals to the collection which are in their own subseries within the collected materials.
Statement of Arrangement
Series I: Subject Files. This series contains files concerning both Dr. Endres' professional life as a professor and her various
writings, documentary films, and volunteer projects. Subseries include: American Association of University Women, Commission
on the Status of Women, Correspondence, Documentaries, Office of Women in Higher Education, Research Topics, UA School of
Communications, UA Women's Studies Program, Women's History Project, Writing Projects.
Series II: Collected Material. This series contains materials collected by Dr. Endres that relate to Akron and Summit County
history, women’s history, and the history of The University of Akron. Subseries include: Printed Material, Collected Correspondence,
