History of Inventory of Cultural Goods
In late 1997, Rev. Christopher Armstrong, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, initiated a project to document and
catalog the cultural, artistic, and historical patrimony of the Archdiocese. Four churches were selected to have preliminary
assessments which would set the course for assessments of the remaining churches. The four churches selected were Assumption
(Walnut Hills), St. Agnes (Bond Hill), St. Michael (Lower Price Hill), and St. William (Price Hill). The ultimate goal of
the project was to provide documentation of the church structure itself, an inventory the sacred items in the church, rectory,
etc., and photograph and video documentation. Gray & Pape, Inc., Elizabeth A. Scheurer (Public Art Consultant), and Cecelia
S. Chewning (Decorative Arts Consultant) were hired to handle the project. The project ended in 2006, although it was not
completed.
Scope and Content
The record group is arranged into eight series. The Pilot Study concerns the beginning of the project, its goals, and implementation.
Thorough inventories of the four pilot churches were completed and were to be the standard for the remaining churches. However,
this goal was not reached. The persons hired to complete the inventory gathered research materials for several churches, artistic
styles, Cincinnati artists, and Catholic art in particular. Church Assessments were made for over half of the churches (123
out of 221) and while these are not complete inventories, the do give parish history, facts regarding the architecture and
sacred items, as well as notes if any follow-ups are needed in assessing the property.
Video footage was captured for a handful of churches. Although these videos were not transferred to the archives, scripts
used for the videos were.
A detailed inventory of sacred items and artwork at the Athenaeum of Ohio (Mt. Washington) was completed in 2003 and is the
final record series.

Series 03.06-01: Pilot Study
These files document the early correspondence establishing the committee for the project. Standards were set in regards to
goals, scope, terminology, and consistent documentation for all parishes, starting with the four preliminary parishes.
Series 03.06-02: Church Assessments
These forms are preliminary inventories of churches in the archdiocese. Assessment forms completed for most churches give
a brief history of the parish, a description of the parish complex, and descriptions of the buildings and sacred items. If
known, the provenance is documented. Some assessments do not have completed dates, but it may be assumed that all assessments
were completed between 2002-2006. Parishes are listed alphabetically by name, and not every church was visited.
Series 03.06-03: Church Inventories
These church inventories are complete documentation of the church complexes: church, rectory, school, sacred items, sculpture,
paintings, etc., if applicable. The four churches with inventories are St. Agnes, Assumption, St. Michael, and St. William.
Series 03.06-04: Church Research
In anticipation of inventories made of churches, research was conducted to understand the history and local significance of
the churches. In this series is research for seven churches in Cincinnati. Included is information on prominent church artists.
Series 03.06-05: Reference Materials
Reference materials gathered by the consultants include information on local artists, church floor plans, the Fantacchiotti
angels from the Cathedral now at the Cincinnati Art Museum, and stained glass windows.
Series 03.06-06: Video Documentation
Video footage of five churches was captured, although the videos themselves are not at the archives. This series contains
transcripts of the narration used in the videos.
Series 03.06-07: Photographs
Photographs were gathered from two churches: Assumption Church in Walnut Hills and St. Pius Church in Cumminsville. The latter
includes negatives.
Series 03.06-08: Athenaeum of Ohio
The inventory of the Athenaeum of Ohio, Mt. Washington, was made in 2003. Organized into four binders, the inventory includes
the property, ceramics, prints, sculpture, textiles, ceramics, and photographs. Also included is the Berwanger Center. Volume
4 includes a DVD of digital images from the Athenaeum.
