Reverend Dr. Aemilian Sele was born on January 17, 1847 at Freisenberg in the Duchy of Liechtenstein. He began his studies for the priesthood at the Jesuit College in Feldkirch, Switzerland where he studied Philosophy. From there he went to the University of Innsbruck in Austria. Sele was ordained a priest on July 26, 1874 at Brizen, Tyrol and in 1887 received a canon law degree from the Gregorian University in Rome. Upon his arrival to the United States, he spent some years teaching at the Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Thereafter he was among the first to join the faculty of the recently re-opened Mount St. Mary Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio where he taught for 30 years and gained his fame as one of the most renowned theologian of North America. He died January 29, 1918 and is buried in St. Joseph Cemetery in Cincinnati.
The records of the collection focus largely on Rev. Sele's scripture lecture notes. Although undated, they are from his tenure at Mount St. Mary Seminary (1887-1918). Included in this collection is a small portion of correspondence between Archbishop William Elder and Rev. Sele, certificates of education, his 1918 funeral cards and funeral homily, and a small collection of photographs of priests, mostly unidentified.
