History of the College of Nursing and Health

The Cincinnati Training School for Nurses was founded in 1889 as a small private school modeled after the Bellevue Training School in New York. The school contracted with Cincinnati Hospital which provided its students with practical experience. The school closed in 1896 due to a lack of financial resources.

The Cincinnati Training School for Nursing was followed with by the Cincinnati Hospital Training School headed by Olive Fischer. In 1903, the school went from the two year to a three year program.

Laura Logan became director of the school in 1914. When the new Cincinnati General Hospital opened in 1915, the school was renamed to the School of Nursing and Health of the Cincinnati General Hospital. In 1916, the School of Nursing and Health became part of the College of Medicine of the University of Cincinnati. It was among the first university schools of nursing in the country.

Under Laura Logan's leadership, many innovative changes took place. The school became one of the first nursing schools to offer a baccalaureate degree in nursing. The Bachelor of Science degree program consisted of two years of pre-nursing courses in Liberal Arts and then three years of nursing courses and clinicals. Students could also still take a three year certificate program. In 1918, the school began to offer college credit for clinical work. Laura Logan left the school in 1924 and was succeeded by Pheobe Kandel.

After Miss Kandel resigned in 1927, Catherine Buckley succeeded her as director. She reorganized and standardized nursing policy and procedure in the school and the hospital. In 1938, the school was granted full autonomy and became the eighth college of the University of Cincinnati. In 1939 a four-year baccalaureate program was introduced which replaced the five year Bachelor of Science and the three year certificate program. In 1943, the name of the School of Nursing and Health was changed to the College of Nursing and Health.

In 1945, Laura E. Rosnagle, a 1926 graduate, became Dean of the College of Nursing and Health. In the late 1950s, the college began offering graduate programs and the first student graduated with a Master of Science in Nursing degree in 1958. In 1968, the college moved into it's own building, Proctor Hall. The college is a charter member of the National League for Nursing, began offering a Ph.D. program in 1990, and became the first nursing program to offer co-op in 2002.
