Biography of Arthur T. Hamlin

Arthur T. Hamlin was University Librarian at the University of Cincinnati from 1956-1968. A native of Haverhill, Massachusetts, Hamlin was a 1929 graduate of Blair Academy in New Jersey. He attended Harvard University and graduated in 1934 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He received a degree in Library Science from Columbia University, and held posts at the Harvard University Library, University of Pennsylvania Library, and the New York Public Library. From 1949 until 1956, he was Executive Secretary of the Association of College and Reference Libraries.

In 1962, Hamlin lectured on librarianship at the University of Pavia, Italy and other Italian universities under a 6 month United States educational exchange grant from the State Department. He also served as a consultant to the American Library Association on flood damaged libraries, and received a Fulbright Scholarship to study British university libraries. He left UC to become director of the university libraries at Temple University in Pennsylvania.

Scope and Content

Papers of Arthur T. Hamlin, former University Librarian at the University of Cincinnati including research on the library needs of faculty and students on campus and the work of a Library Committee appointed by UC's Provost. The collection also includes research on use of libraries in the United Kingdom.
