Report No. 74 "The Relief Problem in Hamilton County, Ohio, 1937" - This study was undertaken with the aid of 190 citizens when the failure of state aid and the exhaustion of local funds for relief purposes precipitated a number of acute problems. Information was gathered as to the extent and severity of needs on the part of county relief clients; as to their non-relief resources; their standards of living before and after the stoppage of relief; their ages, health, occuptations, and other characteristics affecting their employability. The data were assembled and analyzed to ascertain the extent and costs of dependency in Hamilton County, prior to to the stoppage of funds. The possibilities of reducing the caseload were critically examined, by re-employment, by the discovery and utilization of non-relief resources, and by transfers to other charitable agencies. The costs of the resulting probable caseloads were then estimated; the amounts necessary to defray the expense of the resulting relief for 1937 were estimated, and estimates of available resources were similarly made, so far as was possible.
