Scope and Content

The OSU College of Nursing Collection (approximately 24 linear feet) contains albums, artifacts, documents, photographs, and scrapbooks containing The Ohio State University's School of Nursing over many years.

The collection is weak when dates are involved because only some the records in this collection contain dates. Many of the photographs have no date and the names of the people in them are unknown as well.

Statement of Arrangement

This collection is arranged in six series, they are as follows. Series I, Albums, contains two albums. One is an album of an Alumni Day in 1984 and the second is a Nursing Album from 1983-1988. Series II, Artifacts, contains from OSU School of Nursing, St. Francis Hospital and others. The most significant artifact seems to be one of the first four Senior Bands ever issued. This band was issued to Rena E. Daily Coppess on December 16, 1916. Series III, Documents, contains documents of certificates ranging from 1918-1947, clippings from 1920-1986, correspondence from 1954-1965, correspondence with photographs from 1915-1960, events from 1921-1969, history from 1917-1983, publications from 1900-1983, and oversized photographs. The correspondence with photographs category has a copy of each photograph with its correspondence and the original photographs can be found in series III within this collection. Series IV, Photographs, contains photographs of events, individuals, group photographs, yearbook photographs, and general photographs. This series consists of five albums. The most complete album in reference to dates is the yearbook photographs album. The albums of group photographs, events, and general photographs all start with a specific date but it is unknown as to how many years the rest of the photographs in these albums span. The album of individuals contains no date at all. Also, the yearbook photographs album contains many sets of negatives. Series V, Scrapbooks, contains 24 scrapbooks comprised by nursing organizations, classes, and individuals. Materials that came loose from their original pages are located in a file within each box. Series VI, Oversized, contains oversized items.

Restrictions on Access

The collection is open to the public and is available for viewing during the hours that the Medical Heritage Center is open to the public (1-5PM, Monday-Friday) or by appointment. Materials do not circulate and must be used in the supervised reading room.

Restrictions, including copyright, may exist and some materials may be too fragile to photocopy or digitize. The MHC charges for duplication services, which must be performed by staff.
