Robert Campbell Tarbell, MD (March 3, 1871 - April 15, 1945) graduated from the Medical College of Ohio in Cincinnati in 1897. In 1898 he applied for the position of assistant physician at the Columbus State Hospital, a psychiatric institution. He worked there until 1901 when he went to New York City and undertook further education at the New York Post-Graduate School of Medicine. Tarbell focused on mental and nervous diseases, and he would go on to specialize in psychiatry. By late November 1901 he had returned to Columbus and went into private practice; he may have been associated with the Ohio Sanatorium Company which owned the Park View Sanatorium in Columbus. In 1912 he established his own psychiatric establishment, Glenrest Sanitarium, which was located in Worthington, Ohio. He was also associated with the state prison located in Columbus. Tarbell married Mabel Sara Richards, MD (March 4, 1886 - September 28, 1967) on her 28th birthday, March 4, 1914. Mabel Richards graduated from Columbus Central High School in 1904, and received her MD from Starling-Ohio Medical College in 1908. They had one child, Mary Sallee Tarbell Carlile (1915-2001).
