Scope and Content

The Mark J. Cohen and Rose Marie McDaniel Collection is arranged into three series, Correspondence, Humor in a Juglar Vein, and Collectables. Each series has various subseries. Series I., contains correspondence and is sorted by year. Sub-series 1 is general correspondence on a wide range of cartoon-related topics, including unpublished manuscripts by Mark J. Cohen, and correspondence related to Cohen's business as cartoonist's agent. Frequent correspondents include several prominent MAD Magazine cartoonists, Jim Scancarelli and Morrie Turner [often related to comic strip scripts Cohen wrote for each of them] as well as the cartoonists represented by Cohen. Many cards and letters are illustrated. Correspondence related to topics covered by Subseries 2-3 may also be found in Subseries 1. No effort was made to collate topical correspondence. Topical files reflect Mark Cohen's organization of these materials. Documents and artifacts in Series II., are a part of the traveling exhibition Humor in a Jugular Vein: The Art, Artists, and Artifacts of MAD Magazine, Donated by Mark J. Cohen and Rose Marie McDaniel August 11, 1999. Subseries 1 contains artifacts displayed in the traveling exhibition Humor in a Jugular Vein: The Art, Artists, and Artifacts of MAD Magazine. Subseries 2 concerns correspondence related to the exhibit. Additional correspondence related to this exhibit may also be found in general correspondence. Series III., contains collectible cartoon related artifacts and novelty items.
