Biography of Frank L. Byrne

Frank L. Byrne was born was born in Hackensack, NJ, on May 12, 1928. He graduated from Trenton State College and received an MA and PhD in history from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. After service in the U.S. Army, he taught at Louisiana State University from 1957-1958 and then Creighton University from 1958-1966. Byrne joined the Kent State University's Department of History in 1966. He received a fellowship with the Institute for Bibliography and Editing in 1985 and became a senior fellow in 1988. By 1987, he worked as the project editor of The Papers of Robert A. Taft. Vol. 4:1949-1953, a publication by the Kent State University Press. He also served as the editor of a series of Civil War memoirs for the University of Tennessee Press. Byrne retired in 1995 after twenty-nine years as a faculty member at Kent State. He died on April 21, 2002 in Ohio.

Scope and Content

This collection provides insight for how students responded to Frank L. Byrne's efforts in allowing the students to complete a spring quarter history course, during campus closure after the Kent State Shootings on May 4, 1970.
