Scope and Content

This collection contains a sampling of historical newspapers published in the United States of America, primarily dating from the nineteenth century. There are a large number of newspaper issues (or partial issues) that deal with the assassinations of Presidents Abraham Lincoln, James A. Garfield, and William McKinley. There are also examples of abolitionist newspapers in the collection, as well as some newspaper issues covering the U.S. Civil War and the 1889 Johnstown (PA) Flood.

Materials in this collection are organized geographically by state of origin, then alphabetically by title, and then by date within each title.

Restrictions on Access

Many of the newspapers in this collection are very fragile and require extreme care in viewing. Photocopying and scanning are not permitted for many of these items. Please consult with Special Collections and Archives staff for more information.

This collection has been compiled by Special Collections and Archives from a number of acquisitions and donations, many of which lacked specific acquisition and provenance documentation. Some of the materials in this collection are believed to have been donated by Thomas A. Cox of Kent, Ohio. Many of the papers in this collection were donated by Roy Pierce of Kent, Ohio, in 1991.
