History of Archbishop Alter High School

An archdiocesan, co-institutional high school, opened in 1962 in Kettering, a suburb of Dayton. With a diocesan priest as principal, the staff included five Sisters of Charity, five diocesan priests, and four lay teachers. Freshmen only were admitted the first year, building up to a four-year high school, along with a regular increase in faculty. Enrollment eventually reached capacity 1000. The Sisters lived in Corpus Christi Convent for the first year. In 1963, Alter Convent opened, with accommodations for 40 Sisters. In 1989, the number of Sisters residing there was down to five, so the Sisters turned over the building to reduce crowding in the school.
