History of Saint Brigid Parish and School

In 1879, three Sisters of Charity arrived in Xenia to take over St. Brigid's School which had been conducted by lay persons since 1855. The original frame schoolhouse was in poor condition, but a new, modern structure was erected in 1914. The Sisters resided in several houses before settling into a permanent residence in 1925. Commercial classes were added in 1905 with all four years of high school being offered in 1917. The first high school graduation was in 1920. The 1950's saw two major changes-a new grade school outside the town for grades 1-6; and the closing of St. Brigid High School because of small enrollment. By 1998, only one Sister of Charity, Sister Lois Jean Goetke, Principal, still served in Xenia.
