Biography of Saint John Vianney Parish

The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati began their rural ministry in Georgia in 1976. Sisters Jean Therese and Rose Mullen visited various Appalachian areas in Georgia but most seemed to have an abundance of volunteers. It wasn't until they found Vidalia, Georgia, and Fr. Clem Borchers, that the Sisters decided to settle. By September of 1976, 3 additional Sisters had joined Sisters Jean Therese and Rose Mullen: Sisters Marie Amadea Heaney, Jean Evelyn, and Ann Elizabeth. The Sisters provided various services to the people of Sacred Heart Parish and Toombs County. Services included: Pastoral Assistance, Christian Education, Home visitation, Women's Guild, and supervising LPN graduates from the St. Francis School of Practical Nursing. These 6 nurses had made commitments to volunteer their services during the summer of 1977 and donated their salaries to Catholic Social Services for the poor. In 1983, Sisters Jean Therese Durbin, Daniel Marie Delaney, and Joyce Brehm began their ministry in Georgia. They took up residence in Pelham, Georgia, to minister in St. John Vianney Parish in Camilla, Georgia. Their ministry work included much of the earlier work previously mentioned, but also included services through Family and Children Services in Camilla, Mental Health Services, in conjunction with the local Office of Mental Health, and provision of transportation of parishioners to doctors and other necessary travel. Since their ministry in the parish was limited by the wishes of the Pastor, Sisters Jean Therese and Daniel Marie did volunteer work with the Mental Health Office. Parish work did include Religious Education, Adult Bible Study, and Home Visiting. Home Visiting was enriched by taking along some of jean's homemade items. Circumstances made it more feasible for the Sisters to live in Camilla in closer proximity to the church. Initially, relationship with the pastor was friendly. However, when a new pastor arrived, Fr. Wayland Brown, the situation for the Sisters rapidly deteriorated. Concluding that they could no longer work with the Pastor, the Sisters left Georgia in 1986. With the departure of these Sisters, the ministry of the Sisters of Charity within Southern Georgia ended.
