Biographical/Historical Information

Theodore (Ted) Ashmead Langstroth II (b.1910-d.1978) was a passionate and eclectic collector. One of the offshoots of his collecting was the assembly of numerous scrapbooks put together around a specific theme or person. Langstroth took the time to research his interests and often included insights on the assembled materials, neatly typed and placed on the appropriate pages in the scrapbook. One of his apparent main collecting interests was color lithography, although it has been suggested that Langstroth collected not so much of what he was truly fascinated in, but what needed saving. (From: Fleischman, John. “The Labyrinthine World of the Scrapbook King,” Smithsonian, v. 22, no. 11, 1992, p. 82.)

Scope and Contents

A collection of materials that Thodore Langstroth II assembled on Mary Louise McLaughlin and other Cincinnati artists, decorative arts, and potteries, including scrapbooks, articles, and various items from his collections. Langstroth donated the items to the Cincinnati Art Museum in the late 1960s to early 1970s. Some of the letters (addressed to Alice Hook, librarian at the museum) that accompanied his gifts are also included.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into two series: the first includes collected materials relating to artist Mary Louise McLaughlin, whilst the second includes collected materials on various local artists, decorative arts, and ceramics.

Conditions Governing Access

Whilst the archives aims to provide access to the records in its care to the fullest extent possible, it reserves the right to restrict access for any reason. Please see the archives’ Access Policy for further information: www.cincinnatiartmuseum.org/visit/library-archives/the-archives/

Related Material: Related Archival Materials

Langstroth made a habit out of giving parts of his vast collection to various organizations, usually where the items had originated from or had a significant connection. The main (Downtown) branch of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County has a large collection of Langstroth’s scrapbooks.
